ohn Baptist de La Salle, canon of Reims, helped a small group of free school teachers to live up to their mission as Christian educators and, renouncing his privileged position, joined them in the years 1680-1685. Thus was born the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, entirely dedicated to the Christian education of the “children of craftsmen and the poor”, all lay people and leading, in the city only, a life close to that of the religious, with the black cassock, the white flap and the “four arms” (a coat with floating sleeves) which would be known throughout the world.
